AltaSea is taking over \”City Dock 1\” on San Pedro, CA waterfront in joint efforts between universities and the Port of Los Angeles. 28 acres of labs with circulating seawater, classrooms and support facilities will be established as AltaSea.
Mayor Villaraigosa, Councilman Buscaino, and other officials delivered statements about the AltaSea project on June 17, 2013. Geraldine Knatz, Port of Los Angeles executive director, and the City of San Pedro have been looking to diversify their urban environment by initiating a project such as AltaSea.
The AltaSea project will not only bring in various interests to San Pedro, it will also bring jobs. Many jobs at that! It is estimated that 1,087 construction jobs will be created in the first phase and 4,161 in the second phase.
AltaSea has already acquired funding of $25 million from the Annenberg Foundation to help start the development. As of June 17, 2013, a capital funding campaign has been launched to raise $500 million needed to complete both phases. Overall AltaSea will take 15-20 years to complete.
