Belmont Heights Community Association Meeting on February 2014
The Live Distinctively Team attended the Belmont Heights Community Association meeting last night, February 11, 2014. A lot of great things are happening right now in Belmont Heights, Long Beach, CA:
1. Repaving of Redondo Ave, from 2nd Street to Anaheim has began. You should see crews marking up the street in preparation for the re-pavement. Redondo Ave will be open for use while under construction, but it is advised to plan an alternate route to avoid traffic delays. We are excited about the re-pavement! Yay for no more potholes!
2. Southeast area specific plan, a.k.a. SEADIP, is under way. Plan involves 1,500 acre area of southeast Long Beach, in particular the Westminster 2nd Street & PCH intersection. This plan will take approx. 3 years to develop. If you would like more info about the plan and/or would like to join in the discussion, please visit http://www.lbds.info/seadip_update/. If you would like to join the advisory committee, applications are due by Friday, Feb 14th. Applicants will be selected by March 1st.
3. As of right now, the Seaport Marina Hotel owner has applied through the city for a redevelopment of his land. He is legally able to do so under the current codes. His intentions are to build a small shopping center that will have a hotel component. This is completely separate from the previous plans of project 2nd & PCH that came to a halt 2 years ago.
4. Above ground or overhead cable wires have been a hot topic recently. Home owners are complaining of rats nests, fear of safety, and unpleasant view obstructions. Verizon, the Mayor of Long Beach, and Belmont Heights Community Association has joined forces to eliminate unused or excessive wires. If you know of any Belmont Heights homeowner who would like to have excessive or unused wires removed, please contact the Belmont Heights Community Association. Progress is being made!
5. Another hot topic is helicopters flying at low levels within Belmont Heights. This covers all helicopter flights, including private and media. Issue was voted on and added to the Airport Director\’s list of issues to go over with FAA. Homeowners have been complaining about odd times these helicopters are flying low and seems to be out of their flight paths. Issue should be resolved soon.
6. The strip of land originating at Ximeno stretching to the Colorado Lagoon, known as Pacific Electric Right of Way, is back on track for development. More info to come.
7. Belmont Heights Community Association would like to develop a series of events to allow community members/neighbors to get to know each other. Many new homeowners have moved to the area and by having a block party or social event will allow homeowners to meet and connect. Goal of these events are to hopefully spur friendships, camaraderie, and crime watch groups.
8. Awaiting decision from Neighborhoods USA to see if Belmont Heights made the list! This is our first entry into the contest.
9. There are heavy discussions of city beautification and development within the beach paths. It has been ruled by the Coastal Commission that the beautification can happen only on the cliff side of the existing beach path. The Coastal Commission has set rules/guidelines as to what can and cannot be done for this beautification process.
10. City council electoral hopefuls attended the meeting. They were allowed 5 min to speak to their mission and campaign. Afterwards many socialized with the electoral hopefuls to ask questions and gain insight to their campaigns.
